The Red-bellied Woodpecker, Melanerpes carolinus, is a southern American species rarely seen in the northeast United States and even more rarely in eastern Canada. A quick check indicates that there have been only nine recorded sightings in Nova Scotia until this little fellow made his way to our feeder. He’s been here two days now. He seems to be co-existing quite well with our resident flocks of Blue Jays, Cardinals and Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers. What a lovely little bird.
