The Crocosmia is a small perennial genus in the iris family Iridaceae, native to the grasslands of South Africa. They are grown worldwide, and more than 400 cultivars have been produced. They have colourful flowerheads of 4 to 20 vivid red or orange flowers on a horizontally branched stem. This flowerhead will open progressively from the base, starting in the next day or so. It takes about 3 days for all the flowers to open. Each flower will become a favoured watering hole for hummingbirds.
